Where tennis and golf both require optimism, positive self esteem, alertness and tactical thinking as stated by USPTA.com, according to Dr. Jim Gavin, author of “The Exercise Habit”, tennis “outperforms golf in developing positive personality characteristics.”

In the sport of golf, on the other hand, you must be able to call a penalty on yourself and realize that the mental portion of the game is equally as important as the physical part.

Since there is an age “limit” as to how long a tennis star can truly be in top condition, it is not surprising that after finishing their careers some tennis players move right into golf, the game that can be played for a lifetime and where career is not necessarily limited by physical “wear-and-tear”.

The most recent tennis superstar who made the move into golf was the American Andy Roddick. Retired in 2012, the former World Number One in tennis made ​​his debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am but, according to his own words, the debut was “so-so”.

The very first successful transformation from tennis to golf was the American Ellsworth Vines.

In the 1930′s, Vines was in the top rank of tennis players winning “Wimbledon” (one time as an amateur, three times as a professional), the US Open (twice as an amateur and once as a professional) and “Roland Garros” (as a professional) .

After retiring from tennis Vines won five tournaments on the PGA Tour and, in 1951, became a semifinalist in the PGA Championship.

Australian Scott Draper did not achieve such significant success as a tennis player – his highest achievement was the 42nd place in the ranking, five wins in ATP tournaments and a win in the Australian Open mixed doubles. In golf, however, Draper had to wait for his first win only two years – in 2007, he bore the bell at the PGA tournament in New South Wales.

Another former World number-one tennis player, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, took up golf quite successfully. A Sydney Olympic champion, winner of the Australian Open and the “Roland Garros” in 2011, Kafelnikov became the champion at the “Russia Golf Championship” and is currently considering whether to take part at the Olympic Games in Rio.

Women tennis players have also made the move into golf.

The most famous female tennis-golf professional is former world number-one Althea Gibson. While playing tennis, Gibson became the first African-American woman to have won five “Grand Slam” titles. Ms. Gibson is a legend, considered by some to be a “female Jackie Robinson” who crossed over into golf as the first African-American woman to play on the LPGA Tour.

There are many golf lovers among active women tennis players, Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic and Daniela Hantuchova, for example, often play golf on an amateur level. The latter, by the way, can be seen with a club in her hand more often than other representatives of WTA-Tour.

What many golfers may not be sure about is the amount to tip for services rendered. Here are some general pointers concerning tipping at a country club golf course:

• Quality of service determines the amount of tip to a large extent. The better the service the higher the tip.
• The cost of greens fees also influences tips. Tips in a club where a round costs $150 will be higher than in a club with a $50 greens fee.
• In case you play by invitation or as a member of a foursome in corporate round and did not pay an official fee, tips are still implied. It is unfortunate that not everybody offers tips even when they should, as many golf course employees work for tips. Some players will rush to the clubhouse, for example, and leave their golf-car so as not to come into contact with service staff who meet them after the round and take bags from cars, golf shoes for cleaning, etc.

It is not common to tip on all golf courses. Inquire about best practices in the particular club in which you will play golf: in some golf resorts, tips are forbidden.

A few instances where tips are not expected:

• Tips are not a common practice on public links or on municipal courses. On most of these courses, there are neither manned bag drop areas nor employees to meet you after your round.
• If you play a golf course where there are no special dress code rules, tips are probably out of place.

If you plan to visit a golf course where all potential tip receivers are present you must be ready to spend quite a sum on gratitude.

Valet Parking

It’s a rare service but some golf resorts and high-end clubs provide valet service to their guests. The amount of tip is similar to the same service you receive at restaurants and hotels…approximately $3.

Bag Drop

Comparable to a porter in a hotel or baggage personnel at the airport. These folks help you to get your bag out of the car upon arriving at the club and put the bags on the golf cart. A common tip is $2-3 per bag or $5 (give or take). Sometimes bag drop employees will also clean your shoes after a round: $5-10 dollars for a pair of polished shoes is standard.

Starter

It isn’t necessary to give a tip to the starter unless he provided a specific type of service to you. The common duty of starters is to check you in on the first tee and tell you when it is your turn to take your place on the tee box. It is quite another matter when you come to the course without having booked a tee time and the starter quickly fits you into the schedule. If you stay at a golf resort, talk over preferred tee times with the starter at once. Such a service deserves a good tip.

Cart return

Approximately $2 for each golf bag carried and about $5 if your clubs are cleaned

Caddie

Not all golfers prefer to use caddies, and so you can always save your money by using Mobitee, which will calculate your scores automatically and even advise you the best club for a shot. If you are made to use a caddie, be ready to tip an experienced one $20 and up. Some golf clubs will set the amount that a caddie receives in advance but, more experienced caddies should receive about $40 and rookies receive about $30. It isn’t necessary to tip a caddie master unless you asked him to do you a favor, e.g. you were on vacation and he provided you with a set of golf clubs.

Forecaddie

Forecaddies are caddies which are assigned to a group of players. They don’t carry your bags but do carry/clean your putter, track your shots and guide you through the golf course. Standard amount of tip for a forecaddie is $50-100 for a foursome.

Beverage Cart Driver

The minimum amount to tip the Beverage Cart Driver is $1 and the most common tip is 25% of your purchase whether or not the drinks and snacks are free.

You should remember that tipping employees is not a must but it is your appreciation of level of service provided. This golf blog is just a guide. The best way to know best practices of a club is to call ahead and ask about their policy concerning tips.

Nevertheless a good tipper is always appreciated.

That being said, slow play is a state which golfers get used to and can also be the result of players of the sport not studying golf etiquette. From this it follows that the disease called “slow game” is usually treatable. Of course, the player himself should understand this and, to a large extent, his partners in the game should help him.

When watching other players on the golf course we plainly see their actions which slow down the game. Remember the group in front of Tiger Woods during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open? For Woods, it was a round which seemed to go on forever! This type of behavior should never happen in professional golf but, during our own amateur rounds, do we always pace ourselves?

Analyzing our own actions, we often find out that we act in the same way that irritates us!

Before you read our recommendations on how to best expedite the pace of your game, it is important to note that these proposals have nothing to do with our attempts to hurry you along: these suggestions should set you up for constant readiness to play golf using common sense and take into account rules of golf etiquette.

The conclusion that must be made after reading this is that, as soon as it is your time to play, you should be ready to address the golf ball and take your shot.

Here are a few recommendations on how to speed up pace of your game:

• Choose a tee box which corresponds to your level. If your handicap is a thirty, then a game from the tournament tee box will only add strokes…and frustration to your round.

• Your foursome shouldn’t walk to the farthest ball then to the second, etc. Each player should go directly to his ball and wait for the farthest from the hole to take the shot.

• Same goes for two players using one golf-car: farthest from the hole plays first dropped off with all the necessary golf clubs. After the first player has hit a shot, he should walk towards the car while the second player is busy setting up his shot.

• When on the way to your golf ball, use this time to think over your upcoming shot, determing distance and club selection. You can always save time by using Mobitee and its features of club advice, rangefinder and calculating distances.

• If there is a chance of a lost or out of bounds golf ball, play a provisional ball immediately so you don’t take more time returning to the position of the previous ball. If you are just playing with friends and not competitively, or if you are a beginner, just drop the ball not far from the place where the first ball was lost.

• Start reading the green and indicating the putting line in advance of your putt.

• Don’t chat with your partners when it is your turn to take a shot. Break away from the conversation, take your shot and then continue talking – with a round taking approximately four hours to complete, you can get plenty of conversation in when it is not your turn to play.

• In case you drive a golf cart and it is impossible to approach the ball, walk to the ball taking several clubs with you. To find out that you don’t have a proper club when you are at the ball means you will have to walk back to the cart which is unreasonable and tiring during a round.

• When finished putting out, don’t stay on the green chatting with your friends or rolling putts. Leave the green immediately for the group behind you to be able to continue their game. When there is nobody behind you, a couple of putts are possible.

• Having left the green, don’t stop in front of your cart and dig around your bag : quickly get into the cart and drive to the next tee and reposition, etc, at the next tee box.

• The same goes for marking your scorecard; don’t calculate your score on the green or close to it. The Mobitee scorecard will be of great use here because you don’t have to count your strokes; Mobitee will do it for you!

• Don’t give advice to the partners in the group during the round; put it on hold until you are on the driving range.

• Although you officially have five minutes to look for a lost ball, if it’s for competition or there’s money (or pride) on the line and you’re going to spend some time looking for your ball, give way to the group behind you. If you play a friendly round in which you don’t exactly keep to the rules of golf, just forget about the lost ball after a minute and use a new one.

• When on the tee box, keep track of your partners’ drives. If they lose their ball, you’ll be able to note wehre the ball landed thus avoiding long searches.

• When you are on the tee waiting for the group in front to clear the fairway, you don’t have to keep to the rules of priority. Forward tee players who are short hitters can go first, providing there is no chance of hitting the group in front of you.

• Work out a brief structure of how you’re going to set up to the shot. If you spend a lot of time on preparation, think how you can reduce it by, perhaps, taking one training swing instead of two or more.

• Carry enough extra tees, markers and balls in your pockets so not to waste time on searching for them in your bag.

Hope these recommendations will help you to make your pace of play shorter and your time on the course more enjoyable.

Golf on the spur of the rock – Pine Cliffs Golf Course, Algarve (Portugal)

The nine-hole, par-3 golf course at Pine Cliffs Resort in Algarve is surrounded by secular pines. From the top of the cliffs on which it is located, a fantastic view over the Atlantic is disclosed.  Devil’s Parlour course requires maximum concentration and accuracy from the golfers. The sixth hole is a 216-yard world renown cliffhanger, “crossing the chasm below the cliffs and offering sumptuous views over the Atlantic Ocean.”

Golf on a Volcano?  – Lanzarote (Spain)

Although we’ve previously mentioned that you can golf on a volcano in Italy, some of our readers will be surprised to learn that Lanzarote, a volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean, has anything at all to do with golf! Thanks to the development of water softening technologies, it has become possible to cultivate green grass needed to cover golf courses.

Lanzarote Golf resort in Puerto de Carmen is remarkable for its gorgeous views over the Atlantic and big palm trees, an exotic element of the local scenery.

From the Earth to the Moon – Coober Pedy Golf Club

Want to play a round of golf on the moon? No problem! In an Australian mine town, Coober Pedy, there are no trees and greens at all. In fact it is a big sand bunker!

Nine holes of this local golf course are hidden in sand and peat fills. Because of extremely hot temperatures, golfers have to play at night. Special bright shining golf balls are used for this purpose. Golfers place small pieces of turf round the tee position to make the first shot. One great benefit about being a member of Coober Pedy Golf Club: it is the only club in the world that has reciprocal playing rights with The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

Naturist golf – La Jenny (France)

Naturist Resort La Jenny on the south of France is waiting for those who want to master their golf skills in the buff. It is here where the only golf course in Europe for nudists. Ice-golf – Uummannaq (Greenland)

Not all the time is it necessary for golfers to roll the ball on green grass!

Ice-golf is played on the snow. Only a red ball stands against the background of shiny, powdery whiteness! Despite some misconceptions, ice-golf is not a new invention. Adventurists loved this game as far back as the 17^th century.

There are some facts about the spreading of the ice golf – “kolven” – in the Netherlands (frozen expanses of channels were used as courses). The course is changed not once a year but once a day as it is among ice blocks which, as you know, don’t stand at one place. With the exception of uncommon “sets” in the form of snow and ice blocks, the game is very close to traditional golf on green grass. The world ice golf championship is annually held in Uummannaq. Here fans of a traditional summer game can try their hand in a new, unusual kind of golf.

It’s the only country in the whole Southeast Asia that managed to escape European colonization and home to the world’s largest crocodile farm, the largest fish and the smallest mammal, the tallest hotel, the largest gold Buddha… any clues?

Perhaps all of us have heard about the huge Buddha at least once, so you are right, today’s golf destination is… Thailand!

Apart from being the world’s number one orchid exporter, Thailand can also boast thousands of golf courses throughout the country, which attracts around six million tourists every year – interested in not only the country’s beauty but also in first-class golf courses.

Thailand’s golf heritage is around ninety years old and comprises more than two hundred golf clubs, some with thirty-six-holes.

Consisting of three distinct nines (named Mountain, Lake and Valley) – each has its own characteristics and all three, when combined, create interesting combinations which are equally enjoyable. It’s really worth playing all three, especially since carts are obligatory.
